You know that feeling when you think you’ve finally caught a break? That’s exactly where my client Dale found himself a few years ago. Picture this: he’s a brilliant guy, who came up with this kinda boring shipping device that could genuinely change lives. His little startup was on fire, orders coming in left and right. He’d been the king of that realm but…But Dale? He was drowning.
“Sheevaun,” he told me over coffee one day, “I need help. I’m an inventor, not a salesman or CEO.”
Most people who just want to get their message, product, or program out there have been there. There’s that moment when you realize you’ve outgrown your expertise and maybe handed off something you didn’t want to do to someone else. So when this slick resume with all the sales background landed on Dale’s desk – MBA from somewhere fancy, years at a big-name company – he thought his prayers were answered.
Fast forward about a year. Dale calls me, and I can hear the panic in his voice. “Everything’s falling apart,” he says. This new hotshot had swept in, talking a big game about rapid expansion and market trends. Before Dale knew it, they were hemorrhaging money, and the core innovation – the heart of what made his company special – was about to get snagged by a competitor because of the arrogance of a ‘fancy resume guy’.
But here’s the kicker: this exec had not paid enough attention to some agreements, and the competition was in court about to take it all away from Dale’s and the most promising product for safety… like vultures. It was like watching a slow-motion car crash.
Maybe you’ve lived through something similar, but then again maybe not, but the lesson is real. It’s a tale as old as time in the business world: the mismatch between impressive credentials and entrepreneurial fit.
We rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Out went the big-company crowd, dealt with the way to talk to the lawyers, reset and aligned the energy of Dale and his business, shared how to identify and intuit and hire the right team based on who he is at his core, and in came people who’d actually gotten their hands dirty growing businesses like Dale’s. Taught Dale how to not be a sleazy salesperson but how to be his best storyteller. It wasn’t easy – there were some tough conversations and sleepless nights – but slowly, things turned around.
A year later, I’m having coffee with Dale, and he’s grinning ear to ear. His company’s back on track, innovation flowing, and he’s learned a lesson he’ll never forget.
Here’s the thing: in life and in business, it’s not about the fancy degrees or big names on a resume. It’s about finding people who get it, who mesh energetically (this one is a unique thing to learn and that’s why I’ve written to many books) – who understand what it’s like to build something from scratch, to wear a dozen hats, to make magic happen with limited resources.
So next time you’re hiring or you’re the one looking to get hired, look beyond the surface. Ask yourself: Has this person actually been in the trenches? Is the energy the right fit and will it bring about ease of flow and opportunity? Can they roll with the punches? Will they fit into the crazy, beautiful world of a growing business or a fast-moving environment?
Trust me, your future self will thank you for it. And hey, if you ever find yourself in a Dale-like situation, give me a shout. I’ve got your back.
In the end, Dale’s story is a powerful reminder that building a successful business requires more than just impressive resumes and fancy credentials. It’s about surrounding yourself with the right people who understand your vision, align energetically, and have the practical experience to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Whether you’re an inventor like Dale or running any type of business, remember that finding the right team is essential to thriving in a competitive market.
