Forbes just released a list of the 10 most generous philanthropists. The list includes some common names, including Bill & Melinda Gates, Warren Buffet and George Soros. Others on the list were the Walton Family Foundation – referring to the family members of the founder of Walmart – Eli and Edythe Broad, and Karen and Jon Hunstman Jr.
All of the top donors have given at least one billion to charities (with the exception of Irwin & Joan Jacobs, who have given just over $700 million)– with the top donors (Bill & Melinda Gates) giving $32.91 billion in their lifetime. Which begs the question – just how generous are you?
But I Don’t Have a Billion Dollars!
You may be justifying the fact that you haven’t given to charity on your income, and the fact that it doesn’t total anywhere near a million, let alone a billion, dollars. However, you probably could make a cut in your budget somewhere to make a small contribution – even if it is as simple as foregoing your morning latte and instead buying one for the person who slept outside last night.
Other Acts of Generosity
Remember that generosity is far from just monetary in nature – if you don’t have money to give, what skills or talents can you offer? What help can you give?
