Take Care Of Your People First

Successful companies and leaders take care of the people, the products, and the profits.

In that particular order.

But of the three taking care of the people is the most difficult.

And if you don’t pay attention to your people, the other two will not matter.

Developing a healthy workplace is not a priority for most managers until things start going wrong. When things are going well, no one cares about whether the workplace is good for the employees. But things always get challenging. And it is necessary to create a healthy culture in preparation for difficult times.

How do you develop the best team without taking your eyes off the product and the profits?

Raise the level of enthusiasm at work.

Build A Positive Work Environment

Taking care of the people means that your company is a good place to work.

Most workplaces are a long way off from being considered ‘a good place to work.’ One of the most telling signs of health is the frequency of appreciation. As companies grow in size, important work goes unnoticed. People are not given due credit for their successes. It is expected as part of their job responsibilities.

Not being appreciated tends to make people feel threatened in their roles. As a result, they lose enthusiasm, motivation and creativity.

Do you practice building a culture of appreciation?

Meet With Your People Regularly

As a leader, it is your duty to develop your people.

That requires regular check-ins to see how they are doing. Most modern workplaces have a process for 1:1 sessions between managers and team members. These meetings occur far too infrequently. Schedule weekly catch-ups with your team members and encourage them to be in regular contact with the rest of the team as well.

Healthy communication in the team is a sign of a healthy workplace.

Show People The Outcome Of Their Work

In healthy organizations, people have confidence in their abilities and in the leadership. They tend to believe that if they get their work done, good things will happen for them personally and for the company. As a result, in such an organization, people enjoy their work. They find meaning and fulfillment in their jobs.

The opposite is true when people are uncertain about the outcome of their own work. In unhealthy work cultures, people spend a lot of time fighting against poor boundaries and broken processes. They are generally unclear about their job roles and have no idea what it means to do their job well. Often, they work ridiculously long hours and sometimes get the work done. But they have little enjoyment and no idea what their work means to the progress of the company’s vision.

Show people the direct relation between their work and how it helps the organization move forward.

It is easier to focus on developing your people when you have smaller teams and more agile processes. Invest in key people in your team so that the trickle-down effect of effective leadership flows through the entire company.
