Imagine a runner nearing the end of a marathon. The ribbon at the end of the race is just around the final bend but he is unable to see it. Assuming that he is still far away from the end, he might give in to the exhaustion and end up quitting the race.
Sound familiar?
Most projects require tenacity and grit. The willingness to buckle down and persevere in the face of hardships.
And yet, it is human to want to quit. Instead of staying on track to achieve a hard-won victory, most of us develop a bad habit of giving up just before the finish line.
We all have goals and we all at some stage in life stop working on these goals before we have the opportunity to be really good at them.
You may have promised yourself to learn the piano and given up after a few frustrating lessons. Or riding a horse and quit the moment you had a fall. Perhaps you started your own business and lacked the courage to persevere past the initial failure.
Quitting Won’t Help When You Hit A Wall
It is a natural consequence of learning a new skill to hit the wall.
This happens at the point where your cognitive and physical abilities are stretched to adapt to a new behavior. Instead of pushing past this figurative wall, most people take a break. They check out to recoup their energy. But this temporary hiatus turns into a vacation and soon weeks turn into months while the new desired habit is still to be achieved.
What justifications are you making for quitting? Are your excuses valid?
Most people don’t just quit – they give up in subtle steps. First, they start to skip a few days of practice or workout sessions. Next, they make excuses about how busy life is and the lack of time. Finally, they are so far removed from creating the new habit that they just accept that the goal was too far-fetched to begin with.
No time? Are you sure? What about the time you spend on social media or watching TV? How about those coffee dates that are a waste of your time and energy? And the countless chats, random internet browsing or other addictions which serve no tangible purpose except for killing your boredom? Listen to your excuses – they provide you with an opportunity to push past the wall.
Promise yourself to push past for just five extra minutes a day. Give yourself an extra five minutes of language learning or push yourself for an extra set at the gym. Write an extra paragraph and play the piano for a few more minutes before calling it quits for the day.
What To Do When The Going Gets Tough
What goals have you given up on? New habits are difficult to implement. But they are also impossible to create if you give up too soon.
Stick past the point of boredom.
Hang in there when the learning gets tough.
Imagine yourself as a child learning a new skill.
Allow yourself to quit on a particular day when it’s just too difficult to concentrate. But avoid carrying that same mentality on to the next day. Treat each day as a new opportunity to improve your chances of getting better at the skills you desire to master.
