How Mindfulness Helps To Protect Your Attention

A meditation practice is calming. It helps you let go of the anxieties and distractions that steal your attention. Practicing mindfulness daily helps shift your focus to the present moment.

This ancient practice is a useful habit to direct your focus on finding solutions rather than being bogged down by challenges. It teaches you to become more aware of your surrounding environment.

As a result, you also become more alert to your feelings.

Mindfulness Shifts The Focus From ‘Why’ To ‘What’

Practicing mindfulness shifts your attention from asking ‘why’ to asking ‘what?’

We are often stuck in a state of analysis-paralysis, trying to understand why something has happened to us. Being mindful shifts the focus from the past the present moment.

It takes the focus from the ‘why’ and shifts it to the ‘what’ – bringing control to your present moment. The focus is on your core values – what is important to you? A meditation practice develops greater self-awareness and this awareness leads to a better alignment with your core values.

Aligning your life with your core values forces you to shed your me-myself-I-attitude and devotes more attention to the greater good. It forces you to ask yourself each moment, “Is this really necessary?” And if it is not important, you have a choice to adjust your thoughts, behaviors and feelings accordingly.

When you are living out your life’s purpose at any particular moment, the distractions that fight for your attention fade into the. background. The mental chatter that manifests in a constant stream of anxious thoughts and judgments is replaced with stillness.

To achieve this state, it takes a conscious decision to build a mindfulness practice into your daily routine. Doing so allows you to concentrate on the present moment, become more aware of your surroundings and be more alert to your feelings.

Mindfulness Promotes Creativity

Creativity abounds when distractions are deflected with strong boundaries. To engage with your creative powers, you first need to disengage with the distractions that control your attention.

Where do you start?

Begin with this simple breathing technique to quiet the distracting forces in and around you:

Focus on your breath.

Breathe in softly through your nose and then hold your breath for five seconds. Exhale softly through your nose.

Your breathing should be quiet and unforced. Relax your body and slow down your breathing pace. Hold each breath and pause at the end of each exhale.

As you repeat this breathing exercise, notice how it calms your mind.

Mindfulness Teaches You The Art Of Acceptance

A regular mindfulness practice teaches you to let go of those things you cannot control.

Appreciate what you’re doing in the moment, such as eating a meal or sipping a cup of tea.
