Trying to overcome a lack of motivation? There is a simple, paradoxical solution wrapped up in this simple word: action.
There is no pill that cures a lack of inspiration and a hunger to do more with your life. We are tempted to think that we can motivate ourselves through some external force of nature. The truth is much closer to home…
We all need different triggers to motivate ourselves. For most people, the ability to be motivated is an intrinsic quality. What we do determines our motivation more than what others do or give us.
Our motivation is a result of your ability to perform disciplined actions. Consistently.
Movement Creates Momentum
If you are having trouble getting started, think about the smallest action you could perform right now. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is get moving.
It doesn’t matter if the movement is in the direction of your goals. Getting moving is better than sitting and waiting for inspiration to strike your cold heart.
Want to lose weight but not inspired to hit the gym, for instance? That’s okay, think about other strategies that could excite you.
How about a dance class where you get to meet other people and make social connections? You might also try a new recipe using ingredients that are healthy. Think of creative solutions to aid in your plans to lose weight. There are always options that are more fun than the one you are currently dreading.
What do you want to achieve today? Whether you take massive action or small steps… get moving.
Momentum Creates Motivation
Once you build traction in your action, you will notice that you rely less on feeling inspired and motivated. When you are in the gym, you no longer need to motivate yourself to work out. Showing up at the gym is is half the battle won.
Apply the same principle to any action you are procrastinating. Do it in small doses. With enough traction, the momentum builds and helps you create habits over time.
The opposite of motivation is being in a state of inertia. As a result, the lack of momentum leads to further loss of inspiration.
Motivation Is The Result Of Taking Action
The starting point is a single action – to get started, you need to take some form of action and get moving.
What are you putting off right now? If you had to work on that particular project for just 5 minutes today, what would you do?
Make the exercise more appealing by attaching a trigger to getting started. Flip a 5-minute sand-timer to get started on writing your next article. Or, set the time for 3 minutes and indulge in a mindfulness practice. Take 10 minutes today to write the report from the project you have been working on.
Aiming for an hour today to tackle your biggest challenge is a better idea than allocating 8 hours and never getting started.
