We all get heated sometimes. Fired up and ready to attack, we often fall victim to these emotions and end up lashing out or losing control. If you are a person who gives into your fiery side a little too often, here are three ways to beat the heat:
- Remove Yourself from the Situation
The number one thing that you can do when you feel like anger is getting the best of you is to remove yourself from the situation entirely. Do not count on getting in control of your emotions while remaining in the midst of the situation that is making you emotional in the first place.
- Remind Yourself of Who You Want to Be
Do you want to be a person who lashes out at people? Who people are afraid of? Who cannot control their emotions? Or would you rather be someone who is calm and collected on the outside even when they’re angry or hurting on the inside? Most people prefer the latter. Reminding yourself of you want to be can clear your head and help you to re-enter the situation calmer.
- Re-enter with a Plan
When you re-enter or re-approach the situation, be equipped with a plan of action. Tell yourself exactly what you are going to do and say and stick to the plan. For example, if you are angry at your spouse for not doing the dishes, have your plan of action be to say something like, “I feel frustrated when the dishes don’t get done because…” Or, if it is something as minor as dishes, consider just letting it go.
