Many people have two versions of themselves (or potentially three): the person they are in the office, the person they are in social situations, and the person they are at home. The problem with being three separate people is that your authentic self becomes lost – who are you, really?
Staying true to your authentic self is a daunting task, but it’s one of the most important. Consider these tips for staying authentic, no matter the situation:
1. Stop Worrying About What Others Think
If you’re worried what others think about you and are willing to let this worry influence your actions, then you will quickly lose your authentic self. What do you think of you? Are you satisfied with who you are and what you are doing? If not, how can you change it?
2. Remind Yourself of Your Values on a Regular Basis
Another trick for being your authentic self in all situations is to remind yourself of your values on a regular basis. When you wake up in the morning, review your values in your head. Now think: do those values change depending upon whom you’re around? Do you let your values slide if you’re with your friends vs. your boss or colleagues? By reminding yourself of your values, you’ll have an easier time sticking to them.
