When your ideas don’t mesh with another’s, a conflict may arise. This is especially true if you and the other person are related in a unique way, i.e. you are collaborating on a project together, are co-workers, are married, etc. Here are a few conflict resolution tips that can get you through the toughest of disagreements:
Stop Reacting
If you are a person who reacts – and by “reacts,” we mean gets nasty, distant or upset – when there is a disagreement, it’s time to change your ways. Remember that each person’s opinion is unique and reacting will only fuel the fires.
Think Before You Speak
If only we did this every time that we opened our mouths. Thinking before we speak is an essential part of ensuring that what we say comes out how we mean it. Ask yourself, “Is what I’m about to say going to cause hurt feelings? Distrust? Is it really worth it?”
Be Willing to Compromise
Most of the time, the things that you are being steadfast about probably don’t really matter that much in the long run. Learn to compromise on these things and hold your ground only when it really matters.
