Everyone comes to a point where negotiating for a higher salary can make a big difference in their lives financially. Whether it’s before you have even accepted a new position or 10 years in the midst of working for the same company, knowing how to ask for more money is an important skill.
Go High
The first tip to negotiating a higher salary is to present a number that is actually a bit higher than what you would actually be willing to accept. For example, say that $65K is your minimum – you should present that you are searching for positions that are starting at $70K and above. Not only does this improve your chances of getting a higher amount, but it shows that a) you are willing to compromise and b) you gave up something you wanted.
Know Your Value
If you have something unique to offer a company that you believe know one else has, use this. For example, do you have a special and rare certification? Or experience that provides you with a particular knowledge set? Or have you been solely managing clients for the last 10 years, making you invaluable?
The more that you have to offer, the more you are worth.
