When a traumatic event happens to someone you love, somewhere in the world, or personally to you, your system is likely to be shocked. While the process of recovering from a traumatic event is very complicated, the sequence and steps that you will go through are simple. This is true regardless of whether or not you’re the one in the actual event.
The Steps You Take After Trauma
The first thing that your system will experience during a traumatic event is shock. Shock is characterized by your body shutting down to protect you from harm.
The second step is denial. When you are in denial, your body is recognizing that the event is too difficult or too painful to accept as real.
Next comes anger. When anger sets in, your emotions have no other outlet because other coping mechanisms aren’t able to help your brain or body process properly.
After anger, guilt sets in. This is when you believe that it should have happened to you, or that you are wrongfully enjoying yourself. Guilt is often accompanied or followed by bargaining and depression.
Finally, acceptance and forgiveness are reached; getting to these last two steps can be a painful process.
The Same Sequence for All Traumas in Your Life
This sequence applies to every trauma in your life, and yet we only pay attention when the trauma seems huge. You could have lost your favorite ring that your grandmother gave you and go through these steps, or you could have recognized that your job is in jeopardy or you lost it, or the sequences could apply to senseless attacks on others that results in a lot of news coverage.
