Using The GROW Model To Coach Your Teams

The GROW Model is a framework that helps leaders to coach their teams to better success.

It stands for Goal, Reality, Options, and Will.

The concept was made popular by John Whitmore and compares the coaching process to going on a journey.

If you want to become more effective as a coach (click HERE), consider following the four stages in the GROW framework. It will help your employees to grow and will help you adopt a more targeted coaching approach that delivers great results.

Are your teams FULLY committed to acting on their goals?

Establish The Goal

It’s your job to evaluate the potential of your employees (click HERE). What can they achieve and what skills do they need to develop to achieve their goals?

With the right guidance from you and 100% commitment from your employees, what would success look like?

How will you measure success? The goal that your employee creates will be a powerful incentive and a long-term vision for success.

Examine The Current Reality

When you open a map, you need to first figure out where you are before you decide the destination.

What is the starting point?

Where are your employees failing at the moment and what are their current performance metrics? Are they exceeding or falling short of standards? What are their strengths, skills, and weaknesses?

As a coach, you need to help them make a realistic assessment of the current situation.

Explore The Options

Tony Robbins says, “One option is no option. Two options is a dilemma. Three options and more is the beginning of a solution.”

Guide your employees in determining alternative routes to get to where they want to go.

Remind them that they always have choices and never have to feel stuck. Prompt your teams to discover as many alternative courses of action as possible. Encourage them to think creatively and use unusual approaches to solve problems.

Establish The Will To Act

Now you can start making an action plan from all the discussions in the above steps.

Ask your teams to choose the best option to get started and then commit to make their way forward. As your employees move ahead, you can help them identify potential road blocks and help them to come up with a plan to get around them.
