Everyone knows that too much stress is bad for you, and many people will cite complications like high blood pressure and the risk of a heart attack as some of the most serious risks of stress. But there are a number of other side effects of stress that can affect a person on both a long-term and daily basis.
Physical Effects of Stress
If you have any of the following symptoms, it could be a sign that you’re stressed.
- Low energy levels;
- Upset stomach, diarrhea, or constipation;
- Tense muscles, pains or aches,
- A headache;
- Inability to sleep;
- Frequent colds, infections, or general feeling of poor health;
- Low libido;
- Rapid heartbeat;
- Ringing in the ears; and
- Excessive sweating.
How to Manage Stress
If you have ruled out other health complications and aren’t sure why you are experiencing any of the symptoms above, stress may have something to do with it. Keep in mind that while you may not be too worried about a cold, this is a symptom of inflammation and reduced immune response, which can have serious health consequences over time. You need to get stress under control now. Take some time to diagnose the source of your stress, and start implementing stress alleviation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, and spending time in nature.
