Sometimes, things will happen in your life that are inconvenient, annoying or downright painful and hurtful. In many cases, these will be things that no matter how hard you try, you cannot change. How do you accept the things that you cannot change? Is there a way to move forward in your life and maintain your positive energy?
1. Learn Some Basic Coping Skills
The first moments of learning that something has gone wrong are often the hardest, and you may respond with tears, anger, frustration, or another type of negative emotion that completely overcomes you. When this happens, knowing some basic coping skills can prove helpful. Try:
- Taking a moment for yourself;
- Practicing deep breathing exercises;
- Talking yourself down;
- Reminding yourself of other good things; and
- Presenting the worst case scenario to yourself.
2. Make a Plan
If something goes wrong that you cannot change, the only thing that you can do is respond to the situation in a meaningful way. Rather than being upset about the thing that’s not what you expected or hoped, ask yourself: “What can I do next?” By brainstorming a constructive solution, you can put yourself on a productive path moving forward.
