When there is a problem, the most immediate reaction for most people is to find the quickest way to alleviate the problem. Usually, this means covering the problem up with a quick bandaid (i.e. taking an over-the-counter drug for a headache) rather than identifying the source of the problem.
The issue with this methodology is that nothing is really resolved, and the problem keeps occurring time and time again. Instead of just treating a problem, finding the root cause can be a long-term solution.
How to Determine the Root Cause of a Problem
The most difficult part of this problem solving method is actually identifying the root cause of a problem. The best way to do this is to ask as many questions as possible including what exactly the problem is, what potential sources of the problem are and what can be done to remedy the sources.
Depending upon the scope of the problem, you may need to work with various parties to collect evidence and analyze potential causes. It is important to keep in mind that this process can take time and rushing the process will likely not yield the results you are looking for.
