Many people have quit their traditional jobs and made the switch to coaching. From athletic coaches to financial coaches to life and success coaches and more, coaching is a big responsibility that can have a profound effect on the life of another. If you have transitioned into the coaching business, or are considering doing so, weigh these characteristics of a great coach:
Knowledgable and Experienced in a Specific Field
In order to be a great coach, you need to be
knowledgable in your niche. For example, coaching a triathlete without any athletic experience yourself would be crazy; guiding people through their finances when you can barely balance your own budget is nonsensical. If you are coaching, make sure you’re coaching something that you know a lot about and consider yourself an expert it.
Great Communication Skills
All good coaches know how to effectively relay information to those whom they are coaching, and how to listen, too. When you are an effective communicator, your clients will be more receptive to the information you are presenting, and you will maintain a better relationship with them.
Continuing Education
The best coaches know that as smart and experienced as they may be, absorbing new information and continuing to learn from others is essential. Even if you’re the expert, don’t shut out others’ ideas or turn your head to new information. The more you learn, the better you’ll be!
