Many people have heard of the serenity prayer, a piece of which goes, “…grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Most people struggle with this, insisting upon trying to change the things over which they really have no control, and yet failing to focus their energies on the things that they do have the power to change.
What Do You Have the Power to Control?
The truth is, the only thing that you have the power to control is yourself. This means your own body, emotions, perceptions, actions, and thoughts. You do not have the power to control anyone else or anyone else’s feelings, thoughts, emotions, or actions.
Refocus on Yourself
One of the best things that you can do in order to distinguish between the things that are within your control and the things that are not, as well as gain the insight as to how to control the things that are within your power, is to refocus your energy. Take some time for yourself and analyze the issues in your life that cause you stress. How can you change in order to better manage that stress?
