I was called to a client’s office to help them handle a significant upheaval in their business as they were about to lose a large contract. Their IT team was reliant on the CEO, who has significant ADD and temper issues. No on could get to the real core of what needed to happen first because everything was a first. Business Needs to Have a Hug
Now it’s not like they were saints and their behavior was certainly not going to help them win a lot of new contracts if they continued in that manner.
It was then that I introduced them to a friend of mine who was going to help them bring in a high level executive to help them achieve the next level. When I arrived in their offices I hugged my client and his VP of Business Development and my friend, all business mind you, was taken aback.
She was like I don’t hug and I said well then I guess we’re done. Her VP was the hugging type and had no problem. She didn’t want to lose the client so she hugged.
Some experiences
Funny thing is that this is my norm since corporate days and helping a company get their brand out there and sold.
I came back from Nepal and sleeping at base camp Everest and being bathed in the loving kindness of the Nepali people that my demeanor dramatically changed.
Every conversation began with a touch of the left hand to the heart. This by the way is such a treasure of a tool for all business transactions because you get more heart in the matter and you actually get to the heart of the matter more easily.
I felt that hugs were more necessary than ever and so I started incorporating that into my meetings with every client. They’d extend their hand and I would shake it but say I prefer hugs and lean in for a hug. A few said not me but mostly they all were in agreement that this is a good idea.
