You’re probably familiar with the story of Thomas Edison, who failed countless times – by some reports, hundreds – at creating the light bulb. In fact, if Thomas Edison wouldn’t have failed, it is doubtful that the light bulb as we know it would be around today. What can Thomas Edison’s experience with failure teach us about what to do when we don’t succeed?
Try Again
The most obvious thing to be learned from Edison’s failure is that one must try again when they fail the first time. Giving up on a project or goal because it is challenging is accepting failure. The worst thing that happens if you apply yourself a second, third, or hundredth time is another failure, which will happen if you don’t try, too.
Learn from Your Mistakes
But success is about more than just trying again; it is about learning from your mistakes. The reason Edison was able to perfect the light bulb was because each time he failed, he asked why the failure happen and considered what he could do differently in the future. While it ultimately took hundreds of attempts, his refusal to accept failure and to instead embrace it and learn from it is what led to his success.
How do you handle failure? Do you see it as an opportunity you can learn from?
