Your higher purpose is the reason you exist beyond just turning a profit. It’s the positive change you aim to create in the world. It could be what you’re bringing forth into the world as a product or service. The benefits of your work could be aimed toward environmental sustainability, social justice, education, or anything that motivates you and resonates with your target audience.
But a higher purpose is often at odds with the idea of marketing.
People who are living their purpose often have a dislike and even disdain for marketing. They believe marketing is icky and something they ‘shouldn’t’ have to do.
This very thing is one of the many reasons businesses hit roadblocks.
Too many times I’ve given the lecture to a client that they need to make peace and truly love the idea of marketing. Many times marketing is thought of as “if it doesn’t pay for itself right away then why do it”, and that’s not the way to any long-term success. Marketing is like working out…you cannot do it just once and expect flat abs or defined biceps. And too often I find that people turn to marketing last.
The words you use daily about your product, your revenues, and your ideas are all parts of the marketing process. So let’s remember it begins with you, your mind, and your energy.
If the leader is negative about marketing then the marketing could be the best and most on point but the results won’t be as stellar as they could be.
Even Shakespeare knew he needed to get the message out there about his plays and he used marketing, even in his plays.
Steve Jobs was focused on marketing and the elegance of the message to communicate the product. His formula is still being used today at Apple.
Marketing, spirituality, and purpose all go hand in hand. Heck, all religions use marketing to the max with storytelling and messaging.
Get familiar with marketing. Love the idea. Be ok with someone who knows marketing and can help you turn your purpose and ideas into something magnificent.
